Yes you can do it yourself. You will need a floor jack and jackstands along with normal hand tools. I strongly recommend replacing both the radius arm bushing and the axle pivot bushing with new poly bushing - stronger and last longer than rubber, at the same cost. Do a search of the past posts, this has been covered many times. This thread will help you:

I did mine several months ago, cost me $50 for poly bushings - it was worth every penny... Go for it!

Do you need to remove the springs to do the pivot bushing?

It would be real tough to try to do the pivot bushings while under the truck. Likewise, it would be akward to handle the I-beam with the spring still attached. I can't remember the exact steps I took to remove the springs when I did mine, but while I was at it, I did the springs and king pins/bushings too. What started out as a cheap project grew to some expense, but it's nice to know everything has been refurbished on the front end. I ended up taking the beams with spindles attached to a shop to have them do the press work and honing for the king pin bushings. Will probably be stinky if your going to try burning out the old rubber in the pivot bushings. Wear a mask...

I got my poly bushings from LMC Truck, about $50 for both the pivot and the radius arm bushings.

I found that it is MUCH easier to remove and install the Ibeams with the coil spring removed. It only takes one bolt in the upper clamp and a large 1 1/8" nut on the bottom to remove the spring.

'doyou need to compress the spring? '

No. Put the front up on jackstands, so the tires are off the ground. Then (with tire off) put a floor jack under the front beam, remove the top clamp on the spring and one end of shock and lower beam down.

new bushings?????

I am getting ready to replace the bushings in my 78.

I've seen the ones at LMC (energy suspension) and a set from a company called prothane from JC Whitney. Is either better than the other?

Is it true that poly bushings squeak?

'Is it true that poly bushings squeak?'

I've had mine in my daily driver since last summer and they are silent. The LMC bushings come with some lube that you put on the bushings as you install them - that probably helps eliminate the squeak.
