I have a 2005 F250 4x4 Deisel. I want to put some bigger tires on my 17" rims, but the tires have to be strong enough to support a 24' travel trailer.
Does anyone know who sells all-terrain or mud tires (load range E) that will fit a 17" rim...? I'm looking for about 33" tires or something close.
I don't know if any tires that big in a load E. I would look at the actual load capabilities of the tire first before I looked at the letter rating of the tire. There are many D rated tires that have more than enough rating to carry your trailer.
The "D" and "E" ratings are actually an old carry over for tire rating from the bias ply days. "D" meant that the tire had 8 plies and "E" was for 10 ply. With the currant technology, a more important factor is the weight capability of a given tire. If you look at BF Goodrich's site under specs. They will advise the weight load capacities for each size
Example
BFG All Terrain - LT265/70R17 is rated at 2470 lbs@50 PSI
BFG All Terrain - LT285/70R17 is rated at 3195 lbs @ 65 PSI
Toyo Open Country A/T has a 285/70R17 (33X11.50R17) D Range 3195 lbs at 65 psi. They also have a 295/70R17 E Range Open Country M/T coming out, but who knows when....
I have the 35x12.50R17E mounted on 17x10 Eagle Alloys series 114 on my 2002 F350 7.3L PSD 4x4 CC SB SRW. So far I am pleased with the way they ride and handle. Only have 7000 miles on the tires but they look to be wearing good.
If you are really concerned about load capacity make sure you have tires filled to the proper psi when cold, 5-10 psi below max. inflation reduces the capacity by alot can't remember the exact percentage, I'm sure somebody on site knows.
