Was there anything different about the COE truck engines vs. F100 Y blocks? There is a local guy selling a 292 engine from a 54 COE truck. I don't think this could have been the original in 54.
It also has what appears to be some massive automatic tranny.
Forgive my ignorance...
I didn't post this in the Y block forum because I usually get a better response here and, well, I just like the group here better!
Y-blocks started in 52 as far as I have seen for the Big Jobs. The 54 should be either a 239 or 256 for the C-500/C-600, and just like the other Big Jobs, should be 279 or 317 for the C-700/750 and C-800. The 292 was introduced in 55 or 56 I'm pretty sure, but I think it was a car motor at first, but I'm not certain on that one. The 53 F-750 fire truck I just bought has the 279, and the 54 C-800 I found has the 317, my 53 F-800 had a 317 originally, but it was gone when I found the truck, and now it has a CAT. Earls world has all the info for the trucks in the reference section. If the guy claims 292, then it's either a transplant, or he's just like all the other people who think every Y-block is either a 292 or 312.
Weren't these big trucks a little underpowered, if they were all running small-blocks
Underpowered today but not when the average speed was 40-50 mph. They got up to that speed with gearing and couldnt do much more anyway.
The Lincoln derived Y Blocks were big on torque anyway and had heads/cams to match. The 279/302 evolved into the 332 which was finally replaced by the FT series in 65.
In the F-100-500 series the only V8 was the 239. The 256 became an option in the 55 F600 which became the 272 in 56. Ford/Tbird had the 292 as an option in 55 (272 was the base V8) and it was standard in Mercs.
The FE is a car motor, came out in 58 as the 332/352. The FT is a FE derived truck only block, originals were 330, 361 and 391. Correction from earlier post; the FT arrived in 64.
I had never heard the truck engine refered to as an FT, I always heard them refered to FE meaning Ford/Edsel. I guess it goes to show that even though we're all on the same page, our geographical regions can still change the text on that page.
HUH. Well, I guess I need to get a little more involved with the 60's vintage Fords. I think we've only owned one truck from the 60's. It was a 66 I believe, and I can't remember what it had for a motor. We had a 59 ranchero that had a 352 once though. Other than that, we've only had Y-blocks and six cylinders, and a few windsor blocks.
