I posted this in the wrong place so as a newbie I'll try again. I have a 56 F100 with a tricked up 460 in it. My problem is after my truck sits a couple of days it is difficult to start, I have to crank for awhile and then it finally starts. It act like the carb needs to refill with fuel so it can start. The carb is an Edelbrock 600cfm and I replaced the accelarator pump but it stills does the same thing. When taking off from a dead stop it seems to bog momentally then takes off.
I wonder if I should start playimg with the MSD iginition, maybe the timing?
Hello John, it sounds like a fuel problem, best to check Your fuel pump, change the fuel filter . the fuel might be draining out of the carb bowls as You stated, i use a high flow Holley fuel pump on my stock 460 with a Holley 670cfm street avenger and it starts first go- always. Bowls always stay full of fuel even if it sits for a week. good luck, Jamie - Australia.
Sounds more like the carb float bowl is leaking and when you go to start the engine, no fuel in the carb. The problem could as be added to by a semi plugged up fuel filter.
I had a very similar problem with a Holley (Motorcraft) 4180C. Turned out to be a bad gasket between float bowl and main metering block letting the gasoline leak internally via the power valve passage directly to the intake manifold. Took about two or three days or so for the bowl to run dry. Found it by filling the bowl, propping the carb (~level) on a couple of bricks with a paper towel under it and watched for drips and where they came from. If I remember correctly it took about a half hour or so for the first drip to appear. Maybe you can try this procedure on your carb. OBTW, there were no external signs of leaks with my carb on truck. It just took a lot of cranking time to start the engine after several days of sitting.
It seems that i have the same problem, hard to start without priming gas thru the throttle, but after it gets running all is fine for a few days or weeks until i need the truck again. Thanks to this forum for info on where to look.
