I've heard about some type of graphite gasket sealer made for exhaust manifolds. Can it be used between the EGR valve and the intake manifold along with the gasket? If so, what's the name of it and where can I get it?
Never heard of the graphite sealer. I have heard of graphite impregnated gaskets and donuts for exhaust systems.
Use the gaskets dry unless there is some eroded or pitted spot on the surface that you just can't get machined right now. Then add a little high temp silicone exhaust system sealer as a temporary patch and hope for the best. But see below.
the high temp permatex copper seams to work really well on headers the2 peice header plus intake on my 300i6 was a bear to seal. But with the hi temp copper it worked great until the bolts loostened up. But thats my fault lol
good luck Andy
On my 300-6 the bolts came loose also, nothing would hold the little devils. The best I came up with was stainless steel lock washers until I found something better!
You used to be able to get a type of fastener locking device that consisted of a star shaped piece of metal with tabs that you could bend up around the side of the nut and around the edge of a flange (in the old days b4 locktite). I could not find those anywhere so I made my own. I bought the largest diameter fender washers I could find for the bolt size I was using. Stuck a bolt thru a stack of them and used a hacksaw to cut V shaped notches around the outside which left little tabs that I could bend around to secure the nut to a flange.
No more problems with nuts coming loose on the exhaust manifold.
thats a great idea torque i will keep it in mind since the 300 is in my 79 150 i only bash through the woods now for firewood etc. i just let it leak lol
