Not sure if it is working properly. Put some on the dogs last week and since have found about 4 ticks on each of them. They were inbedded in the skin and already filled up and swollen. Granite they were either dead or very sluggish when i found them but, should they with this medicine be able to get that deep and fill up on blood before they kick the bucket. Doesn't make much sense to me to allow them to dig in before they die (isn't that when diseases are transmitted). Anyway IMHO I would think that it would be just as well not to put any meds on them and save the money, after all once they get that big I can usually feel them and can pull them out same as with the medicine. Does anybody know of any other products that work better. I have been looking into k9advantics but not sure if it is any better.
We've got pretty bad ticks in Oklahoma. We tried a lot of different stuff for our dogs, but none of them seemed to do much good until I tried a tick collar called Preventic. Within a couple of days I stopped finding ticks on them. Now it's all we use. I buy it at the vet office.
We use frontline on our 10lb miniature daschund, and have never had a problem with ticks when camping or whatnot. Granted, she's a lap dog, but she is still out wandering around the campsite and such.
I find that occasionally certain skin types don't seem to work very well with frontline. It spreads across the skin in the skin oil and settles in the sweat/oil glands in the skin. As those glands release skin oils the frontline comes out with it until it is gone. Dry skin, frequent bathing etc can reduce the effectiveness. After washing/swimming it can take a day or two for the medicine to replenish on the surface.
Also it can take a day or two for the frontline to spread across the body. If you put it on friday night when you load the dog in the truck to go camping they will pick up all the ticks before it is effective sometime saturday.
Frontline works great on some dogs, not so hot on some others, but it is technique sensitive. Advantix may or may not work a little better, don't get it anywhere near a cat.
I've seen a worse failure rate with tick collars than with frontline, but the preventic collar is about as good as they get.
KJG26 is right, I have been picking fleas off of cats only to have them run for cover under the flea collars. A lot of good they were doing.
One thing I think is important about that tick collar: It's a TICK collar, not a "flea and tick" collar.
Frontline worked on my cat with bad fleas. However, they were getting back onto him in 15 days, as opposed to the 30-day limit for re-application. So, I just put more on him in 17 days, and then again in another 20 days, and now no fleas. So, it's not the magic bullet, but does work.
But like I said, I think that "flea and tick" thing means it sorta works on ticks... maybe they get so sick they get out themselves and then their eggs aren't viable or they die before the eggs hatch. But it's not a magic bullet for ticks.
YOu may even try sprinkling them with fruit fresh from the grocery store. The ticks may have been on him when you applied it and yes it does take some time for existing critters to die. Notice there are no new ones?
Whatever y'all do do not ever ever ever use any Hartz products on your dog or cat. We have almost lost two cats from the flea drops, caused major major neurological damage. Vet has pics of dogs and cats that have had their backs burned to the bone by the hartz products.
my sissy dog is allergic to most everything.. including flea saliva. frontline has kept her clear of ticks & fleas though i'm not endorsing any product. there is a case against any type of flea-tick stuff. frontline is the subject of a study of the vet association because dogs & cats occasionally die from the treatments. but my dog has taken it well. just my 2 cents
Well, I talked to the vet after finding several fresh ticks on the dogs. And he gave us some frontline spray to use along with the drops. He also said that we should try advantix after we use up our Frontline so we will see what happens.
Hey Buck,
I was taking you literally there I guess. I've used Advantix on my dog, and my dog is around our cats. I thought it was a proximity issue, not a direct do not use on cats (wouldn't anyway).
It's definitely better to be safe than sorry. I just found out yesterday that my dog's sibling, living in Florida, had to be put to sleep this weekend. He got bitten by a tick a little over a week ago. His owner didn't know it. It started out as a swollen eye, then progressed to some neurological problems. Poor dog could barely get up, or even walk in a straight line, and he kept going in circles. It's so sad. I was looking forward to visiting them in December.

We lost a dog to a similar incident one winter. We found the Preventick collars after that, but it was too late for Romeo (my dog). He was pretty sick by the time we realized what was wrong.
