Ok heres the short story. Truck (86 300 4 spd) broke down with the old single barrle carb. Checked spark and fuel. Had that. Decided to go and do the swap to a holley. I picked up a 500 holley and a clifford 2 barrel adaptor for the stock intake. Got it all hooked up and took off the smog pump and egr stuff. Truck still wont start. The carb is getting gas and still is getting spark. What could it be??? Almost at wits end with it. Help MUCH APPRECAITED!!!
You could check the fuel side for sure by spraying "engine starter" down the carb. If it doesn't kick over then, it has to be on the spark side....perhaps the timing of the spark.
You say you are getting spark but is it a good spark? I worked on a car once that the coil was going out on it, but when testing it showed okay. It would show a spark across the plug but not on a testing device. Are you using a spark plug to check it or a testing device? Is the cam moving also? Also maybe try a compression check.
What srercrcr meant was go buy some starting fluid from the store and spray it into the engine and see if it starts then. If it does then you have bad gas (like a tank full of water....could be the result of a pay-back). if it doesn't start then I'm going to put my money on a jumped timing chain (that is if you have a good spark). Does the motor sound funny when it cranks...like the compression isn't right?
Well guys thanks for all the advice and help. Finnaly figured it out tonight. The shear pin on the dist gear was sheared cusing the gear to free spin on the dist. shaft. Tommorow going to get a new shear pin or new dist and it should fire right up.
