gaining torque

howdy everyone

I have a 1979 f150 4x4 with a 351m that has been borded out .040 and a few more small odds and end done to her. My question is how can I get more torque out of my truck? I have the factory c-6 with the 9 inch rear. I have this rebuilt engine but not enought torque.

Welcome Aboard!!

Toss in a 400 crank and a beefy cam (you didn't mention that was done). Other than that, your C6 is eating up about 25% of what that motor is putting out... If you have changed your tire dimensions, you may also want to consider gear swapping in the rear end. It's a little cheaper and less time consuming than a motor tear down

Alittle more ignition timing might help. Maybe a small 4V on an Edlebrock Performer.

1) Ditch the C6. It consumes ~25% of engine power

2) Regear axles with lower gears. This multiply the availble torque more.

3) Drop 351 rotating assembly for 400 rotating assembly. Bolt in deal.

4) Install 351C 2v closed chamber heads (aussie) with 1.73 roller rockers. Have them ported and polished.

5) More cam! Use a mid range torque cam, roller if you can afford it.

6) Run at least 9:1 CR.

7) Double roller timing chain or a gear drive.

How much $$$ do you have? That will determine how much torque you can get.
375+ftlbs should be attainable with a 351M (at least 425 ftlbs w/ a 400).

That 351m won't develop any real torque.
Forget about that engine.

Maybe read the engine series forums.

The engines that developed real torque and Horsepower were the ones from the mid to late 60's and early 70's.

390,429,460

The 460 from the 70's is your best bet.

I agree here with Mil1ion.

Get a 460 and rebuild it for torque. It will bolt up to your C6, though I would have it rebuilt before dropping it back in.

You will need to change mounts and towers though.

FWIW, a friend of mine has a '78 F150 4x4 with a 460. I'm not sure what all he has in it, but it's not too much. 467HP & 500+ft lbs.

The C6 does not eat up that much power...

OK, so I partially retract my statement about the C6 drawing 25% power.
It seems that it's ~20-25% on a STOCK engine. It's not exponential, and I didn't intend for it to come accross that way.

From what I've read and heard it seems to be in the order of ~60hp.

it is really around 20 to 30 hp a manual consumes power too but not as much.

The C6 does not draw 25% of engine power. It does, however use up to about 25 more HP then a C4 or an AOD. Sadly, custom bellhousings to mate a C4 to a 351M are scarce (C4's are much tougher then most think).

The 400 crank will fit the 351, but you'll need the 400 pistons as well (the 351 pistons won't work-they will sit too high in the bore). Both use the same rods. It's a good idea, as anytime you increase stroke, you increase torque.

what about having the connecting rods lightned?
