I was wondering if I should keep the old 360 in my truck or sell it. Or maybe pull the engine and make it a 428 or 390 and get some extra power out of the worn down thing.
I am assuming from your screen name you have a 1972 truck...hope this forum can help you.

If you are just using it for putting around keep the 360. I run the 390 in my 72 F-100 with a wolverine cam, edelbrock intake, 750 Holley, headers and electronic ignition. It has been the best motor I've had yet (also had a 352 and a 360) Only thing I would change is going with aluminum edelbock heads, and MSD ignition (have Wells but I can't match the timing curve very well). A full rebuild will cost you just a little more than the usual 351 would but you produce more low end power and torque and a whole lot better sound. I beat the hell out of my truck (4x4) and the FE block motors can take it. Plus Every time I pull up some where someone asks me what I have in it and I can tell them a 390. Usually the have a puzzled look on there face as it is not that common. If you do pull the old 360 keep alot of the exterior engine parts and brackets on it as these parts are hard to find and alot of aftermarket companies do not make replacements. Such as the alternator and power steering brackets, and the timing chaing cover is not availible anywhere

The 390 you can do with a swap in of a 390 crank and rods. The 360 pistons work great for this. Taking the block out to a 428 bore is close to pushing the casting to it's limit....
I stuck with the 360 planning om keeping my truck pretty orig. but the further I got into it the more I decided to do to the truck and now now it's anything but stock. I wish I went with the 390, easy swap and more power!
For the money spent on a 390 crank, add some more and install a 428 crank, you'll like the results. Get big chamber heads to lower the so called 10.5:1 (410) compression down to 9.0:1 for todays bad gas. Horsepower is good but torque moves heavy trucks.
Every 360 I've ever had would run, as long as it had spark and gas. None of them ever ran fast though. Even when new, or with headers and 4 barrel added. It depends on what you want to use your truck for.
I just rebuilt my 360 only because I wanted to keep the price down and the only thing I am going to do with this truck is around town and pull trailers. I feel the 360 is a great pulling motor with good torque on the low end. My dad had a 410 and that was runner! There is a lot of info out there so read up and then build what you want and what your wallet will allow!
