Decipering what it is will be a trial and error method.
Btw, The little wire you attached to the starter solenoid was the constant power wire which goes to the I terminal. That's why the starer kept going.
Obviously the problem is somewhere in the little wire between the ignition switch in the Start postion and where it connects to the S terminal of the starter solenoid.
You'll have to do a continuity test to diagnose where the problem originates.

Get a test light and see if the wire to the solenoid has power to it when the ignition switch is turned to the start position. If it does not have power, put the tranny in the neutral position and try it again. If you have power then your neutral safety switch is out of adjustment. If it still does not work then the switch is probably bad.
If you do have power at the solenoid and the solenoid is dropping, then you probably have a bad ground. Clean your terminals and every union in the cables.
Got to go,
KingFisher
1. Nuetral-Safety switch out of adjustment or bad.
2. Ignition switch bad or wires loose.
3. Wiring from ignition switch to selonoid.
Please post back what you find.

AK,
As per his post.
His problem is a starting system problem.
He can't get the engine to turn over when he turns the key.

Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts

days in the rain/snow cold of a Iowan winter tearing the hell out of my hair tracing it down. It came out to be the contacts on the ignition switch where wore and not making contact. Just because I have seen this happen to 2 other trucks our 74-79 era (I found this out after relaying my story to two of my buddies that own Fords of this time frame). From what I understand there was at one time a recall on these trucks because of a faulty switch, but don't hold me to this! I would test the switch frist. Just pull off wire block from the back of the switch and "hot wire" it using a paper clip.Hope this helps.:
