Mystery solved, gave up and took it to a Lincoln dealer. It took them a week but they figured it out. Torque convertor locking up at random then releasing. Had to put a data recorder on it to figure it out. Found drop in RPM coincided with increase in speed, then increase in rpm with drop in speed. Power flushed transmisson and added some kind of additive (shudder guard). So far so good, hasn't done it since I got it back.
