Ok, I have a 1974-1976 ford stepside. It is full time four wheel drive. CORECT IF I AM WRONG, BUT THE ONLY WAY TO TAKE IT OUT OF FOUR WHEEL DRIVE IS TO DISCONNECT THE FRONT DRIVE SHAFT RIGHT??
ANOTHER QUESTION THAT I HAVE ABOUT IT IS, DOES THE FOUR WHEEL DRIVE KICK OUT AT A CERTAIN SPEED, OR IS IT IN ALL OF THE TIME.
KIND OF OFF THE TOPIC, BUT ABOUT HOW MUCH WOULD A CONVERSION KIT COST TO CHANGE MY TRUCK FROM FULL TIME FOUR WHEEL DRIVE TO HAVING LOCK OUTS ON IT.
You can not take the front driveshaft out. The NP208 tranfer case switches between the front a rear depending on whitch one has traction. When you put it in low or high lock then both front and rear have power full time.
The NP203 transfer case is similiar to an open differential it will send the power to the easiest to spin driveshaft. Pulling the lever makes both drives spin. if you do remove the front shaft you have to keep transfer case locked in Warn makes a convesion kit but would recommend a donor veh with the newer NP205 transfercase

Hi Jeremy, I highlighted your post because it was written all caps and I CAN'T read it if it is posted in all caps.
Maybe, you could post in lower case instead, please!
I saw questions like this on another site.
I think it was here.
i respectfully disagree, it is not indestructable! let it fill with water and wash out they oil while fording a creek and then drive for a few months and they will get a little noisy as the water leaks out. then drive for another year or so on the oil film that is left and then if you are pulling really hard up a hill with a nasty big block and one tire slips and then grabs you may actually do some damage (but probably not much!). finding replacement parts will be a problem as no one stocks them BECAUSE THEY ARE INDESTRUCTABLE! hawkrod (oh, and yes, the used one i bought out of the paper is till doing fine with over 200K since i installed it. thanks for asking!)

Here you go. I changes everything to lower case I hope this helps.
Ok, I have a 1974-1976 ford stepside. It is full time four wheel drive. Correct me if I am wrong, but the only way to take it out of Four Wheel drive is to disconnect the front drive shaft right?
Another Question that I have is about it is, does the four wheel drive kick out at a certain speed, or is it in all of the time.
Kind of off the topic, but about how much would a conversion kit cost to change my truck from full time four wheel drive to having lock outs on it.
The 205 is not indestructible. I have one that I believe the front driveshaft dropped and punched through the back of the case. The previous owner simply unbolted the front shaft and kept on running. I guess it wasn't really the cases fault. I bought it and drove it home 50 miles like this and then discovered that there also was no oil in the rear end. The 9" still lasted 35k till it gave up.
But the real question is the conversion, you have a case that is full time. If you want to test it, unbolt the front shaft and see what happens, it won't hurt anything. If it all still works, then go get some Warn lockouts and put them in. I would avoid Mile Marker, they seem pretty cheap inside to me.
Jeremy,
Don't change it, I've got full-time four wheel drive on my truck and I love it. Sure you can't smoke the tires, but it will never slip on wet grass, spin you truck around on ice because the pavement was too dry to lock in the T-case. A friend changed it overthe hubs and then changed it back because the truck was helpless. It doesn't effect gas milage that much. Wait till it drops, then change.
Yeah, I know that you say wait until the gas miliage drops, but I am only getting 6 thats right I repeat 6 miles to the gallon, and the sad thing is I am only running 55-60mph and have 33 inch tires, and I have a 390. With a holly carb. One of my buddies is only getting 6 miles to the gallon, and he has a 429 and 36 inch tires.
So any Ideas of about how much a conversion kit would cost, forsay down the road.
