Parked truck yesterday after getting home from work. Ran fine to work and back. Went out this morning and would not start. It would hit but not start.
History in the last year (since I bought it last September), been to the dealer on 7 different occasions for warrantee work on injectors (Every couple of months). They also replaced the wiring under valve covers. Last injector replacement (beginning of June) I picked it up, it would just shut down for no reason (just setting still or little throttle load), it would "cough" (very much like a backfire, hard backfire) under heavy throttle load, smoke would just roll then clear up. No warning! Had it back to dealer beginning of July for this reason and they couldn't find anything (since it didn't do it on their test drive). Suggested I take it somewhere else.
Anyway, I have replaced the CPS and fuel filter today. It does start now but only ran about 3 secs @ 6 or 700 rpm. Twice I had it running @ about 1200 rpm for about 10 secs. Only will start under part throttle.
Good question. I think that they would have checked the fuel pressure/fuel pump, etc. but worth checking to make sure they are working properly. I don't know what it could be but start at the top and check it out. Some one should jump in with more knowledge. Good luck!
Ok, went back out this morning (to try my luck), it doesn't even hit. My round trip to work is about 140 miles.
Looks like I'm gonna have to take it to dealer for repair. Can't be without it.
Does it smoke at all when cranking, if so, what color and how much, when was the last time you changed the oil, how is the outside temperature where you are?
Yes, it does smoke when cranking, believe it to be white(might be a little blue). Smoke will start rolling pretty good after going through a few "crankings". The oil is new, just changed this past Thursday or Friday (probably 400 miles on it). Temp has been mid 40's overnite, mid to upper 60's during the day.....a few days have been kinda cool. Not cool enough to have to use the glow plugs....although I have been (due to issues here of late). Never just set there and crank though.

Sometimes it doesnt have to be all that cold outside, maybe 45 deg or less, and if your glow plugs or glow plug relay isnt functioning correctly, it will take a very long time to crank and possibly not start. The whit smoke on startup is a classic sign of glow plugs or glow plug relay. Both of which are simple dp it yourself jobs
The relay can be checked with a test light. You should have power at both large terminals,( the red and brown wires), with the "wait to start" light on. If you have power at the red but not the brown, check the smaller terminals for power. The smaller ones are the triggers, and the large red is constant power. The brown wires go to the glow plugs. When checking for a glow plug problem pay careful attention to the harness end and connectors for burnt wires.
Blue-white smoke can be observed at all ambient temperatures and should not last longer than a minute or two after the vehicle has been driven. Blue-white smoke can return when ambient temperature is below 10 degrees C (50 degrees F), and after the engine is warmed up due to extended idling. This is due to combustion chambers cooling own during periods of extended idling time. Heavy blue-white smoke may also occur if the engine is operated at full throttle with the transmission in neutral or park. If you see continuous Blue-white smoke while driving, then you probably have air being sucked into the fuel system.
also, Some white smoke is normal on cold start-ups.
Excessive white smoke could be an indication of inoperative glow plugs thefore allowing unburned fuel out(white smoke) also, once started the smoke should clear up in a minute or two
It gives me more knowledge, lol, which is always good. The white smoke is evident and you are probably right. I've tried the "jump" on the selenoid (which there are 2 close together there, lol){eanie, meanie,} just joking.... would hit but not start.
I thank you very much for the info, this is the only place I have to come for info and to learn. I have sent it to a local garage (I know and trust this guy), see what he comes up with. The more info I come up with, the more I can possibley contribute here in the future.
