i have 76 ford f150 4wd------ my rear end gears missing so i have other rear end to install but my question is rear end gear ratio may be different from front gear ratio. does both front and rear ratio have to be match?? will different ratios led to damages somthing ??
Yes, it's like Mil1ion mention, either identical or very slightly different gear ratio front and rear.
For example; if you mix a 3:73 rear axle gear ratio with a 4:10 front axle gear ratio, When in four wheel drive both drive lines will and want to spin at equal rotations, but the front axle gear ratio (4:10 gears) and drive shaft will want to spin faster due to the rotation of tire on the road surface, thus creating binding from your transfer case all the way down to your tires on both axles. Something going to break and it ain't going to be a cheap fix.
The front and rear tires sizes also need to match, or the same effect will result.
This is very good advise. If the rear gearing is different on the rear end you'll be swapping in, it is a must that the front be regeared close to the same as the rear(exemple 4.11 4.10).
Check diff tags on your axles and let us know what you have.
