Every morning when I get in my truck and the temp is below 60 degrees I get a sound from the starter area like an empty spray paint can. I continue to hear the similar sound till the vehicle warms up then its more faint. Now once its warmed up or the weather is warm it wont repeat the noise. Im totally new to the whole mod motor thing and dont know what noises are "normal" or not. Maybe someone could give me some insight as to whats going on down there...
Are you sure its coming from the starter? Is it kinda like a rattle/chattering noise? My truck makes that noise when its cold, im thinking though that it has to do with running 10w30 and the oil needing to be changed.
Its exactly like a rattle/chattering noise. Not real noticable when I stand outside the truck. But it comes from the starter area, I dont think it to be the starter itself. I am running 5w30 in it right now and it only has about 1k on the oil change. I was thinking its just thick oil in the morning, not real sure. I just dont want to dismiss it and then have to chase another problem because of this.
On the other hand, the original owner didnt seem to really pay attention to the maintence of the truck. It had the original air cleaner on it. By me changing the oil it may be cleaning itself out? I should change it again just in case..
I just wanted to make sure I wasnt the only one with this. I guess I can wait a bit then see what happens.
If the PO did not take good care of it then run some Motor Flush in it before you change the oil again and it will clean alot of the sludge. go to a full synthec oil you will tell a difference.
if the noise that you are hearing is the same noise that comes from my truck when it is cold try spraying some WD-40 in the fan clutch and it might take care of the noise. the noise that comes from my fan clutch sounds like an empty spray paint can, but it only lasts for a few seconds. once I sprayed some WD-40 in my fan clutch the noise stopped.
are you sure it's near the starter and not the heat shield on the cat?
Why didnt I think of that... Could be that too. I guess I will have to have someone brave enough to come out in the cold and check the heat shields, as well as all the other stuff.
