At 72,342 miles my clutch stopped working. I went to shift into 1st and it wouldn't go in. Tried 2nd thinking the synchros were the problem and nothing happened. No gear, inlcuding reverse, would let me in. I limped home not using the clutch and took it to the repair shop the next day. During the drive home I did have half a clutch, enough to stop at a light, but I could feel it pulling when it was in gear and I couldn't pull it out of gear cause it wouldn't let me back in. There was never any grinding. The shop doesn't know what the problem is but everything external, slave cylinder, hydraulic lines, etc have all checked out. Is it really possible that I could have bent the fork? If so, is there an aftermarket, titanium-reinforced replacement??
Yeah, its possible you bent it. In fact ford has an updated fork to address it. I would highly recommend getting a new Luk or South Bend clutch with Kevlar pilot bushing to replace the crap ford roller pilot bearing. They use a flywheel with a larger surface on it for more clamping with less effort as well.
After that recommendation and finding out the price of JUST the clutch pack from NAPA (847) as compared to the whole package from southbend (650), we'll see what happens. Should be in by thursday. Should be installed on friday!!! Thanks, Fat diesel
No problem. I have the LUK, let us know how you like the south bend. I've heard nothing but good stuff about it as well. Did you get the Kevlar bushing? That factory pilot bearing is responsible for a lot of premature transmission failures.
I purchased the flywheel conversion kit. Comes with everything I need between the transmission and the engine, even the nifty kevlar bushing and upgraded fork.
