I am rebuilding a 351W. I am installing a mild cam (1000-3500 RPM range), dual plane intake (edelbrock performer) and probably a Road Demon carb.
I would like to take advantage of the setup by NOT using the stock restrictive headers.
I have heard some bad things about the long term reliablility of aftermarket headers. I was told that I would have to change them out every couple of years or so. Is there any validity to this?
Also, any suggestions on a good reliable set of headers without leaving my wallet empty?
Has anybody heard any good, bad things about Road Demon?
headers will last if you buy a good pair. i would consult compcam with what all you plan on running on this motor before you commit to a cam.
now gibson, jba, edlebrock and bassini are all great header brands. buying them with ceramic coating will increase performance and keep under hood temps down. as well as last longer. but that whole replace them every few years is not 100% . just depends on the header brand. remember you want torque not hp so consider this when putting together parts.
Go with Hooker headers. They are inexpensive and are of very high quality. Get the edelbrock intake manifold over the weiand, and instead of the road demon, I would go with a 600 cfm Edelbrock carb. It will be cheaper and will have better driveability. I would also go with a little bigger cam (The edelbrock Performer Cam which is 270/280* advertised duration and a lift of .448/.472, is also made under crane's blue racer series) The low end torque of this setup is outstanding and you can still rev the motor and have plenty of top end there too.
Once you find a header you like look up Jet-Hot coatings. You can buy most headers thru them and they coat inside and out. I know a couple guys that have had problems with the road demons. Mostly not cleaned out at the factory bits of metal clogging them. Not good for a new carb. Wieand stealth is about an inch taller than a performer intake. Stealth does have a wider power band. I have only heard 1 complaint on either and I'm not sure if that guy mounted to right.
Well, I ordered my parts. I went with all Edelbrock, including the headers. They had a set that is coated inside and out.
As far as cam selection goes, I do not want to go too big, because I bought this this truck for my girlfriend to drive in the winter. So it has to have a good idle and good driveablity. If the idle doesn't sound good, she'll nag me until it does. She'll probable complain that it is too loud anyway. No appreciation!!
