85 6.9 E350 Charging Problems

New Alternator, New Regulator, New Battery Cables, New Batteries, Starts up in about a half second but still wont charge. 11.9 volts with engine rapped up about 2000 rpm. unhooked regulator and jumped A to F saw a little spark, rapped it up again still 11.9. Unhooked battery(I Know your not supposed to, but didn't care at that point) out put 9.6 at that point. Installed new battery wire from alt. to starter sol. to bypass fuse link for testing still nothing. apparently I found a poor mans shunt the wire was about 8' long and the ammeter was hooked in about 4' apart ? is that all the shunt is in these trucks, seems like in that location it would never show it discharging. I think I have a DOA altrnator.
I ordered a taurus 130A unit with internal reg. I saw it in another post. Seems simple enough to wire in. I am wondering about the ammeter shunt? I was able to sweep the ammeter both ways with a AA battery, Just not sure what to use as a shunt especially now with th 130A altenator. If anyone has been there done that, I would appreciate any heads up you can give me. thanks.

Well, take the alternator to autozone and get them to put it on their little machine and see if it's good.

As far as the shunt thing goes, I would get rid of it and add a voltmeter to your dash. It will give much better info that the factory ammeter ever did(when it worked).

I would like to get the ammeter working. Assuming I can get something to read on it.
Does anyone Know how many millivolts=Full scale on the factory ammeter. It appears to be pretty tough since I didn't burn it up with 1.5V from the AA. It seems like to give you accurate information the shunt would have to be located between all connected loads and the batteries except the starter and glow plugs, not where it is located now between the alternator bat. terminal and the battery. I found some 150A shunts@ Deltec available in 150A=50mV and 150A=100mV for around $20. If I Knew what full scale was of the meter it would be a slam dunk.

Reading off a 1983, I think yours would be the same.

Charge = Full Scale to mark = .075 Amps at 1.8 VDC, Haft Scale = .04 Amps at .1 VDC
Center = 0 Amps and 0 volts.
Discharge = Full Scale to mark = .075 Amps at 1.8 VDC, Half Scale = .04 Amps at .1 VDC

By the way .075 Amps is 750mA and also gives the resistance of the coil as 2.5 Ohms.

Just reversed leads to Ammeter Connections in dash, not supply. That is why no Negative readings.

Hope this helps.

That depends on if you have an Indicator Light or an Ammeter.
If you have a light it goes to the "S" terminal of the Regulator.
If you have an Ammeter it will not go anyplace.
