"FREE" mods?

"FREE" mods?
I'm sure this topic has been beat to death, but I have to go there.
I've been going through the search feature all morning, checking out threads about exhaust, mods, etc... and I came upon a bunch of people who have cut the end of their air box open, exposing it to a LOT more air.
Have there been any problems with this setup? Pulling in water? I know all of the "cold air" kits have an open element, so I'm sure it's not a huge deal, just curious. I can imagine this would be a decent mod, and would pull in 10X more air!!

BTW - I've got a 5.4 2001SD - Just looking for the quick and easy things first!
