What are the most likely causes for an upper end oil leak? Wife's van is puddling a little, and when you remove the cover inside, the back of the engine, and top of the tranny are thick with oil...
It's not leaking BADLY - lose about 1-1.5 qrts between changes, but still, i'd like to find the cause, and stop it.
I'm assuming valve covers...how difficult is it to snug up the covers, or would I need to replace the gaskets? Should I buy gaskets, or use RTV liquid gasket?
That was were mine was leaking, I snuged up what I chould get to with a open/closed end wrench. The intake is over the intake side of the valve cover, passenger side of the engine on my 4.0.
Yes it is possible to change gaskets, but get ready to feel yourself to be Harry Hoodini!
The first: you have to dismountle air intake tube, after that you can change the gaskets. It is really diifficult, but it is possible.
But check for all the leaks... cranckshaft seales,... distributor... I had to change small rubber ring to stop leaking. But be careful, do not change the ignition timing...
that much oil leakage is a fire danger...remember there is a cat just below there that operates at 1000d F....
buy top line neoprene gaskets if possible and avail.
use a torque wrench in all locations if possible....can save a broken off bolt or stripped block threads...
loose bolts common on these Ford V6's...no harmonic balance shaft...
if you do remove any bolts...use a semi-permanent lock tite on threads
OK, thanks for the feedback. And this is the ever-popular 4.0... I will get down there this weekend, and see if I can snug up the valve covers, and MAYBE the intke (if I can get in there - I'm not a small guy, by ANY stretch of the imagination)
