i have a 2000 f-250 4x4 with 200k and when cranking it over it takes longer than normal for it to start, when it does start up it blows out a lot of white/slightly blue smoke out (like it does when it's about 10 degrees F out)and idles rough for about 20 seconds. then it clears up. I checked the glow plug relay for power and run time, glow plugs for resistance (all were 1 ohm), and glow plug harness for continuity and everything was ok.
so i hooked up a pressure gauge to the passenger side fuel port in the head, and i turned the key to the on posistion and it took about 10 seconds for the pressure to raise to 58 lbs. when at idle it reads 58lbs, and when driving it flat out, the pressure drops to about 45 lbs. is this drop in pressure normal, or is my fuel pump going bad?
if the fuel pump is ok, what else could it be? ipr?
I fully agree with Cookie88.
You should see no drop in pressure, even at WOT.
The amount of fuel that these pumps deliver is more than enough to keep up with demand.
Another possibility is a clogged fuel pickup in the tank.
i checked the screen in the tank and it was clean. since i went through the trouble of dropping the tank, i did the fuel tank mod. it eliminated alot of the "diesle knock"
the fuel filter currently has about 7000 mi on it.
that will be the next item that i replace.
if that doesn't cure the problem, the pump will be next.
I doubt that such a new filter is causing the problem, especially if you didn't find anything in the tank. I certainly understand the need to exhaust all the "cheap" possible fixes first....went through the same thing when my pump failed.
