Injector problems?

I have been having this problem ever since I first drove it in my ownership. It starts fine, and runs fine, but when I stop, then hit the gas again, it kills for a second and then goes back to normal. Often this happens whenever I hit the gas, not just when I brake or stop. Occasionally the engine will die all of the way and will not start again. I am stuck right now at one of those times and have no idea what to do.

Any help would be awesome!

Thanks,
Mckray

An intermittent no start like that can be irritating. The two main things that cause no-starts are either lack of fuel to the engine or no-spark from the ignition system. Do you know yet which is going out? Sometimes, especially on an intermittent no-start, pulling codes from the computer can be a good place to start. Some causes of a no-start will leave codes in the computer's memory.

Actually, I know that it's the fuel. I just got new plugs and it does the same thing, dies for a second when you hit the gas and then comes back to normal.
I just had a thought on it earlier today though. . .

Is it possible, and probable that the fuel pump (high pressure) can't keep up with the injectors and when I hit the gas, the pressure drops so low that nothing goes into the engine, but then, if it (pump) has a second or two to catch up the running will go back to normal. Maybe I just need a new pump. ?

Thanks

It is a possibility, but I don't know that I would make it my first expectation. That fuel pump is supposed to be capable of pumping 4-5 times what the fuel injectors can use (excess fuel is returned to the tank by the FPR). The pump would have to be in real bad shape to not keep up with the injectors. IF you have the two pump system ('86-'87, I'm assuming we're talking about a 2.9L here and not a 2.8. You don't state what year BII you have), then possibly the low pressure pump in the tank is what's bad.

Anyway, enough speculating, have you put a fuel pressure gauge on it to see if this is in fact the case? If the fault is consistent enough, 10 minutes with a fuel pressure gauge and we could stop speculating as to the problem and possible causes and start diagnosing the actual problem.

You should be able to find a fuel pressure gauge for $40 or less at any self-respecting parts store or tool shop.
