It looks like my front differential is leaking at the seal between the front differential "pumpkin" and the suspension beam. It hasn't leaked in the 2 years I've had the vehicle, but it just started a couple of weeks ago. The pinion and both axle seals are dry. I've applied a little more torque to the thru-bolts in the beam with no help. It's not a real bad leak, but I guess I ought to get this fixed before winter sets in.
Has anyone had this apart? Would it be difficult to replace a seal? Does it take a gasket, or just RTV? I would appreciate any input on this.
Thanks.
Those with experience in dropping the beam and opening the differential say it can be done in a few hours. I've never had to take mine out. I expect it would seal fine with the proper RTV.
There are probably a few things to inspect while you have the beam out. I would check the radius arm bushings and make sure they don't need replaced. Also check the axleshaft u-joints -- especially the inner u-joint on the passenger stub shaft.
Might as well change ball joints too. This will be my big winter project this year. My diff has leaked for years, 7 or 8. Doesn't drip anything but the housing is always covere in oil no matter how much Gunk I use on it. As far as I can tell, factory just used RTV and no gasket. I'll look around for a gasket and use it + RTV if I can find one.
