3:73 gear

Is there some one out there who can tell me if there is a way to identify a certain gear in a truck by pulling the gear housing cover and looking at the gear( maybe by counting number of gear teeth etc) I had a transmission mechanic remove my stock 3:31 gear from my 1995 F-150 and install a 3:73 gear. The problem is when I tow my boat I can't tell the difference. The boat doesn't tow any easier. I am wondering if he even changed the gears.

If you remove the rear cover, you simply divide the number of teeth on the ring gear by the number of teeth on the pinion gear.

The difference between 3.31 and 3.73 is not much, so maybe you just didn't notice the difference because it's too small. A simpler way to determine rear gear ration is by counting the number of revolutions on the drive shaft and on the wheel -- for 41 revolutions on the drive shaft you should have 11 revolutuions on the wheel with 3.73.

Would there be much difference from 3.08 to 3.73.
I fing my 4.9l 300 with 3.08 doesn't tow well but Im not sure if it is the rear end or a failing E4OD.
Toxing seems sluggish. If I came to a hill I don't know if I could make it up.

The difference is 17.5% vs. 11% from 3.31, and that's definitely more. Replacing the whole axle (rear) could be cheaper and easier than regearing, as long as the ratio you need was a common factory option on a given axle. Note, if you have a 4x4, that means 2 axles, and there is no easy solution for the front axle.
