Hi, all! Our 76 360 (F100) starts at an extremely high RPM... you can kick it down but it comes right back up AND then you can drive off at 35mph without touching the gas. If you do get it to idle down, before you drive off, it feels like it wants to stall out because it's idling too low!
My son was driving home the night before last, and after 10 miles, it was still idling high enough for him to drive at 30mph without giving it gas.
Any insight anyone has would be greatly appreciated!
No... we haven't had a chance to do anything, yet... I haven't 'worked' on a vehicle in years... What am I looking at adjusting? We haven't had this old truck very long and I don't even have abook on it, yet!
I would start by making sure the choke plate is opening fully when the truck is warm.
Then check the linkage on the passenger side of the carb to be sure the high idle cam is being actuated properly.
Even if the choke is working properly, it sounds like you need to turn down the high idle. The high idle adjustment screw should be on the passenger side of the carb. The cold high idle shouldn't be more that 1000 rpm.
i agree that you should start by spraying carb cleaner on all linkage internal and external. linkage may just be hanging up. if this doesn't help, choke may be too rich. adjust it (its on passenger side of carb) by loosening 3 screws holding black choke housing and rotating housing towards lean--see arrows. you may have a bad choke stat(same as choke housing). it may no be responding to heat. it needs to be replaced then. another weird thing i've seen chokes do is to open properly but then as they get very hot, they will close as if cooling down. this will be noticed by normal idle speed after choke has kicked off but then shortly high idle speed again. choke needs to be replaced here also.
