Frederic, the information that you have provided me with will be very helpful. I was wondering, do you think I should examine how the 4.9 I6 is set up? The C7 is also a I6 but with obviously much more displacement. I also will be increasing the rolling mass by about 1000 lbs. I will also probably need a brake upgrade or do you disagree. I figure that I will need a custom transmission. The red line area of this truck is 2500 RPMs. Do you think about a 7 or 8 speed sounds right?
Yes, a full front frame, suspension, and brake suspension is probably a good idea.
The transmission probably is a clark, and probably a 7 or 9 speed.
Know that most of the "big truck" tranny's have a final gearing of 1:1, rather than an overdrive, so that's something to consider.
I have a friend who put a caterpillar turbodiesel into his mid 80's chevy extended cab which was an F350 equivilant (J/K3500? Not sure of the badging), and getting the new engine into the engine compartment was somewhat a bit of work, but was paled by everything else that had to be done. After two years of fabrication, he ended up changing the project mid-stream due to all these complications. What the final result ended up being was that his cab, and bed, ended up mounted on a "big truck" frame that he hacked the middle out so the length was about right, using all the "big truck" wheels, axles, springs, mounts, and the frame itself. That's probably the way he should have gone initially.
After the engine was in his 80's chevy... the bumper sagged tremendously. New springs, new this, new that, a lot of boxing and framing, replacement of the front axle and leafs and so forth, helped a lot but it was obvious one good pothole and something was going to break.
BINGO ANDY! Only the one I saw was an International cab and front end.
The only reason I know about those is because one of my neighbors owns one... Why? I dunno, he uses it as a daily driver, but that cat engine can be felt (vibrations) from blocks away, I love it.
It's a dump truck with a pickup bed. If you load the pick up bed enough fulfill the max gvw, you'd better believe you'll be shopping for a new pickup bed. It's overkill...
