Swapping brakets question?

I know this has probably been covered time and time again but just as a refresher, will car pulleys and brakets (A/C to p/s) work on a 2wd pickup with a 460 from a 460 car? For that matter will truck and car brakets interchange? I doubt it but I do know of a 78 LTD in the weeds with a 460 and need everything for a 460 truck with A/C. Think it would work? Thanks!

The car brackets may fit in a 2wheel drive but it would be tight on the ac compressor. That car engine probably did not have the york style compressor. As far as will the brackets swap from car to truck, yes the base 460 is the same. I have used a modified version of car brackets on one. And the rest I use either truck bracketry or van bracketry .

Oleblue,
I've tried mixing and matching brackets before and ended up with a complete night mare. If you can get the brackets from a truck, that would be your best bet. Also...make sure to get the complete set....all the brackets and all the pulleys.

I got a spare 460 from a 71 Lincoln when I bought my 78 F150. I stripped it down and trashed the block, but kept everything else. It had the York style compressor which I installed on my truck for on board air. The brackets are different as are the pulleys. I had a hard time lining up the belts until I put on the water pump pulley and power steering pump bracket from the Lincoln motor. The crank pulley was ok so I didn't need to change that. I think it depends on the options that motor came with, too.

My advice, grab all the brackets and pulleys you can. It beats trying to hammer, cut and weld the old ones into fitting.

To swap in the whole bracket system, yes they will work on a 2WD truck, not 4x4. Mixing truck and car parts might not work, never tried, but I have car brackets (original ones) on my '79 with 429. If I remember right, the A/C brackets are different from car to truck, but the compessors are the same so the brackets can be swaped.

Thanks for the info so far..........do you think pulleys and brakets from a 351M/400 off a truck would work? I mean using just the pulleys and A/C braket? I can't find a complete car or truck but know of plenly of 400 stuff. I know for sure the P/S braket is different cause the 400 one won't go far enough back to the head to bolt up. I might be wrong but I think the pulleys will bolt up (belt groves being in line is another question). I have an L & L kit on the truck now and have nothing but problems with it.....the factory alternator won't work right with it without bending the tension bar; the P/S braket works but needed shimming. The A/C doesn't line up at all and the alternator belt hums. Therefore, I give up on aftermarket junk. I just want Ford. I'm hopeing if I just use the L & L P/S braket, the 460 car alternator braket with work with it and 400 pulleys and A/C braket. Think it will work? Or anyone know of a truck 73-79 with a 460 to get pulleys off of? Thanks again.

NO. Don't even start getting 351/400 parts mixed in with the 429/460 parts. They resemble each other, but they are not the same. Try salvage yards on the national network. You have many years of 460's to choose from. I'm not sure past '87, but up to '87 will work. I'm not sure when or if they ever changed A/C compressors. Your main concern is getting the A/C bracket, after that you can alway's get chrome "dress up" brackets for the PS and alt.
