Heat problem

'97 f150 XLT, 4.6L At one time, whenever I turn the temp selector to heat, I'd always hear the sound of air venting, and the rush of coolant. Now I don't. It seems now that the ac compressor kicks in instead dumping ice cold air. Any ideas?

Is the compressor kicking in or are you just trying to say your heat is not working? AC will not work in the heat position, Only MAX AC, AC, BiLevel, and Defrost. Vent and Floor selections net only fresh air at the temperature selected. Now if your blend door actuator is inoperative or the door broken or the temp control **** is broken, you will also have temp control problems. It could also be that you are simply way low on coolant also.

Both are happening. The ac compressor kicks in on any heat setting in addition to not having any heat when the heat setting(s) is selected. Checked blend door and actuator; both operational. Recently had coolant flushed and refilled professionally. I also checked heater core inlet hose and found it to be full of coolant.

Sounds like the mode selector switch is bad then. It's turning on the AC when it shouldnt and may have a vacuum leak as well internally in the switch.

Thanks for the input, I'll try replacing the switch.
