gas tank sending unit float

Greetings all:
My gas gauge didn't work on my 89.
I've dropped my gas tank and found that the float was full of gas, two small cracks where the connecting arm circles it.

I've drained, cleaned and JB welded the float, and I'm waiting for it to cure before I reassemble and install the tank.

I was thinking about making a sleeve out of an old bike inner tube as insurance to prevent the arm from irritating the float.

Anyboody see any problems with this plan?

As always, thanks for your assistance.
Chuck

The two things that come to my mind will the JB and the tube hold up to gasoline long term. Maybe you could put some in a jar of gas so you can keep track of it.

My concern too.
The JB Weld website indicated that, if fully cured (15 - 24 hours), the product would stand up to gasoline. So I cooked it overnight under a reading light, then buttoned it up and reinstalled the tank. Viola!

Thanks for the guidance.

Good luck with the fix, I never knew JB would hold up to gasoline.
