Try the neutral safety switch. If it's an automatic, the switch is usually mounted on the side of the tranny, where the shifter lever comes out of the driver's side of the tranny.

The switch should have two red/blue wires. If you unplug the switch, and put a jumper between the two red/blue wires, the van will crank if that was the problem.

Make sure your battery ground cable is grounded to both the body and engine.
Use a test light from the center of the ground post of the batter to a good ground on the engine with your headlights on.
If it lights you have a bad ground or ground cable.

Go out under the hood and look for point #3 in the diagram below. Your van should be similar. At point #3 you will have the big battery + wire, but you will also have some smaller wires hooked there too.

Look at the smaller wires and either right at the point #3 connection, or further down the wire, you should see a colored rubber thing in the wire. This is a fusible link. It could be burnt out.

Do the headlights work? If not, I am pretty sure your fusible link is burnt out.

Thanks for your quick replys. Yes the only thing that works is the head lights, nothing else. I changed the solonoid-which is different than pictured, the ign switch. I was driving along and everything went dead.

At point 3 there should be a Yellow wire and it has an 18 GA White Fuse Link.

This Fuse Link I think is open, pull on the Yellow wire with a grip on each end of the Fuse Link. If it stretches it is open.

An Open is a gap in the wire or device (Fuse or Fuse Link).

No power (electricity) will flow through an open.

Open is the opposite of a complete circuit.

It should not be open.

Thank you I'm checking now. I also have a 87 bronco that needed a smog pump but when I replaced it and tried to start the bronco without a belt I heard a queaking noise from the engine as it tried to start...after replacing the air-pump I drove it one time and trans slips out at 35 mph but if I take my foot off accelator it kicks back in. I have these two broke vehicles my only trans and can't get to work until I fix one. Please help---Thanks

Received a PM from wshop2, the yellow wire had a bad connection at the starter relay. Cleaned the wire and now it works OK.

You should post transmission problems over in the Transmission Forum.

I take it you are talking about a full size Bronco and it has an Automatic Transmission. We need to know what Transmission you have, AOD, C-6 and so on.
