Ok my speedometer jumps around like crazy when it gets over 55 Mph, under that speed it just kind of bobbles around. I'm thinking its my speed sensor. If it is how easy is it to fix and how expensive. Also my ABS light will come on when i have a hard brake and sometimes my parking brake light will come on as well. The abs light will stay on until the truck is off. I read through the ABS forum but didn't get a real good answer. Also where can i get some easy performance mods for this truck. 2.3L 5spd short bed regular cab black.
I have a 94 4.0L 5 speed and wobbles quite a bit under 25 MPH, I figure it's just normal, I mean it's not brand new, but just outta curiosity will tag this along with your question.
94s still used a cable, there is a sensor in the tailpiece but that is not for the speedo. sounds as if you either have a cable going bad or the speedo itself.
The other users have the speedo problem covered...
For the ABS light, do you have rear ABS or 4 wheel ABS. If you have rear ABS check out the link in the tech info thread at the top of this for on pulling the code. Post the results.
well i don't know what i have. This truck didn't come with a manual or anything. I bought it for 500 bucks and it runs great. When the speedo bounces around i can hear like a buzzing noise coming from behind the guages and inside the dash. How do i find out if the truck is all wheel ABS or just rear wheel?
more than likely its rearwheel abs, I think if you read the VIN someone can tell ya. as to the buzzing it sounds like the cable needs to be lubed, but I would guess that you will need to R&R the cable pretty soon. If nothing else lube it, as I recall you can pull it from the transmission side. Either graphit lube or some spray white lithium grease up the cable, spray, reinsert the cable remove, spray reinsert the cable should do it. dont need to spray but for a couple of seconds.
The speedo is doing what my 94 did, I lubed the cable didn't help, then replaced the cable still didn't help. Fianlly ended up replacing the speedo gauge itself with a rebuilt one, that finally fixed the problem. From what I was told by the place I got the rebuilt one from it was fairly common for the speedos to go out on certain year Rangers
If i just wanted to replace the speed sensor anyway, where would it be located at? Also do i really need a tensioner tool to get it loose or can i just use a socket wrench to replace the belt?
Is the differential the center round part on the rear wheel shaft....Sorry not used to rear wheel drive vehicles yet. I order the Ford repair manual on Cd, so i guess i can wait until that comes in.
Yes. That is the rear differential. It turns the power from the tranny into both wheels.
To get to the VSS, climb under the truck, preferebly from the passenger side, WHEN IT'S COOL!!! You're going to go straight under the muffler and keep sliding over til you get under the driveshaft. Looking down you should be looking right at the front of the rear diff. On top, there will be a plug coming out. You can try and get your head up to see it, but good luck with that. Use a I think 5/16" or 3/8" socket to remove the retaining bolt, then just pop it out. After you replace it, put a little gear oil or tranny fluid on the seal around it and pop it back in, then put the retaining bolt back on, tighten it down, and check it out.
