engage 4X4

Ok, this question is going to sound stupid, but I'm new to 4x4. I pulled off onto a dirt parking lot to check my 4x4. I engaged the 4x4 HI (99 F250 V10) and gas it some gas. The back driver's side tire spun, but not the front tires. Tried it a couple of times and gave up. 1) do I have to lock the hubs to get the 4x4 to engage? 2) do the front tires only engage after a certain point? 3) do I have to lock the hubs before 4-wheeling?

If it is not the shift-on-the-fly setup, then yes you do need to lock the hubs when engaging the 4 wheel drive. If you don't lock the hubs, all you will be doing is giving the transfer case an extra workout without the benefits of 4 wheels driving. I do not know about the shift-on-the-fly because we do not own any vehicles that have that.

If you have ESOF (switch on the dash) - and the 4x4 light on the dash IS coming on, then try manually locking the hubs. If it works after manually locking the hubs, we can try to help you determine what is wrong.

If you do not have ESOF, yes, you have to get out and lock the hubs.
