gauge indicator question????

I have an 04 f250. On my gauges i have an indicator light that looks like the gas cap. I checked manual and it says that it is usually from loose cap. My cap is not loose. And since that is on , now my check engine light it is on. Anybody know what this is?
I guess I should also mention that this happened after I put my superchip tuner on the truck, like a week or so later. Is there any relation?

Did you ever run it with the cap loose, though? The computer systems today tend to grab onto a fault code and hold onto it for a long time.

Otherwise, you probably have leak in one of the evaporative system somewhere.

no I never did that. That sounds complicated. And what causes that?

If you never left the cap off, I'd be willing to bet the Check Engine Light came on because it set a code for an evaporative system leak of some sort.

Besides the fill tube and the lines going to the fuel injection, there are lines that handle buildup of vapor pressure in the tank. Years ago, they just vented it. Today, they can't do that because it violates emission standards. What they do is put in a system of lines and valves to send that vapor to pollution control devices. That is what I mean by "evaporative system".

You probably have something wrong with one of the valves or you have a line that either cracked or disconnected. You could still check for the obvious, though, if you like...

I would check and make sure that the gas cap seal is not torn. There is something resembling an O-ring at the top of the cap on the inside. If it's torn or eaten away, try another gas cap.

Another easy check is to see if there is anything wrong with the fill hose. You might have a loose or broken clamp, a cracked hose, or something rusting through.

If you have a Tuner, it will probably let you read and reset trouble codes. If you have that function at your disposal, it might help you out. I'm betting for a code that means "Gross Evap System Leak", but that's a shot from the hip.

Best of luck to you. I don't think the tuner killed it, though. Not with that gas cap light.

well I put my tuner on it and it came up with a DTC 0457 which is evap syst leak. But my fuel cap looks fine. So I reset the codes and hope for the best.
