I still cant figure out this problem....I have posted before and have now had a chance to fix things...so here goes...My 76 Highboy has a 360 with a 4bbl,small cam, otherwise stock engine. It also has a vibration issue. The vibration is between 2000 and 3000rpm and does it no matter what. Clutch pushed in or out ...moving or parked...It is definatly something on the engine i just dont know what...I changed the motor mounts, plugs(which looked fine),wires(also looked ok), Air cleaner, and gave it an oil change. Unfortunatly I Still have the vibration. The engine(remanufactured in 99) sat for a few months before i bought it and otherwise seems to run good. Is this maybe a stuck valve? If so how do i check this?Just pop off the covers and look? Also, could it be the clutch? The drivetrain does seemm a little noisy but has new u-joints and seems to be ok. Any other ideas? Could this be more serious? Should i be more concerned? Thanks in advance for all the help!!!
Did you check your harmonic balancer (also called a vibration damper)?
Often, with age and mileage, the rubber bonding material between the inner and outer sections of the damper will deteriorate, causing the outer ring to shift. This will create an "unbalanced" condition at the crankshaft, which will result in a vibration.
If this is the case, replace the damper ASAP. If the damper comes apart when you're goin' down the road,it can do some serious damage!!
When it happened to my truck, it caused the water pump belt to roll off the pulley, which caused the engine to overheat, which split a seam on my radiator, which made my wallet empty itself rapidly, and caused those around me to learn many new cusswords!!
Good luck,
Bear
As you eliminate the various possible causes of the vibration , I would consider the flywheel , or it might be the case that it wasn't "resurfaced" when the engine was supposedly rebuilt in 99 according to your post----and it could be that they actually used the wrong flywheel!!!!!My next question is --did the vehicle have this vibration --Before you purchased it---and were you aware of it or just ignore the vib?????????fd :-X11
I was aware of the vibration issue before i bought the vehicle and as for the rebuild, it was done by a place who is now out of buisness..however it was rebuilt in 99, i have the paperwork from it. Also how exactly do i check for a stuck valve? Anyway, The only other problem this truck has, is a shim issue in the rear end...Other than that the truck came with a power turn plow, new tires and rims, shiny paint and a clean title for only 2K! I i figured between my shop at work and the WONDERFULL people on this site, I could deal with the vibration issue one way or another...
