I have an original Ford-o-matic transmission in my '56 F100. The shift lever doesn't stay in park when put there but slips into Reverse. Is there a way to tighten up the shift lever or is there any way to correct this problem?
If you still have problems after adjusting the linkage and use the original column maybe you have problem in the shifter. The spring in the upper tube of the column make the shift lever to move to the locked position in Park. The spring could be to weak or the "plate" that holds the shift indicator could be worn out. Hope you will understand my swenglish.

The Colonel's recommend adjustment is easy to make with some WD-40 and an open-end wrench if you're will to take a crawl. It's even easier if you have someone to operate the shifter while you're under the truck Be sure to check th U-bolt that holds the bottom of the shift column to the sheering column. Mats has a good point too. Not only do the springs that tension the lever get weak, but the cap that holds the springs in the tube can develop a hole in it, rendering the springs ineffective. It's worth disassembly and inspection. I have spare srpings & cap which I can donate if required.
