Speedometer sending unit?

Hello I am pretty much sure I have a T18 4 speed tranny in my 1980 Ford F100 2wd 1/2 ton. The speedometer on it was not working so I followed the cable drive to the end and realized it was not hooked up. I looked at the tranny and there was a rubber plug in the side. I removed it and felt in the hole and I could feel the gears, but I am sure it needs some kind of worm gear assembly to hook the end of the cable to. Anyone know what I am talking about, or better yet, know what I need? I really need a speedometer, cause there are way too many cops in my area.

You should be able to get the gear unit that goes on the end of the cable from any junk yard for just a couple bucks but you'll also need to have the right gear on the end of it to calibrate correctly for your tire size and axle gears. You can get the actual gear from any Ford dealership, just tell them the gear ratio and tire size and they'll look up which one is right for you. On the assembly that the gear attaches to, any junk yard will have them by the dozen. If you can't find it let me know, I may have a spare I can send you.
