Temp gauge not working

My temp gauge doesnt work on my 76 4X4 360. I trouble shot the sending unit as per the Hanes manual. It says if you connect a test light to the disconnected sending unit lead and connect the clamp to ground and get a flashing light it indicates that the instrument voltage regulator is operating and the gauge curcuit is not grounded. What does this mean? Where do I find the gauge circuit?

Thanks

The gauge circuit grounds through the sending unit. It uses a variable resistor inside the sending unit that is temperature reactive. As your coolant temp increases, the resistance through the sending unit decreases causing your gauge to go up. If you skip the test light and ground the connector, you'll see your gauge needle peg, assuming the gauge, circuit, and regulator are operating.

So your saying that the sending unit itself is bad?

Just do this :

Touch the wire to ground ....does the gauge needle peg ?

Do you have a pulsing current on the wire ?

With the engine hot ...does the gauge needle rise ?

If not, replace the S/U with a proper one (one for a gauge ,not a idiot light)

or First

Some people wrap the S/U's with tape which causes a bad ground or Faulty Sending unit.

Check the threads and reseal with a conductive sealer.
