I am finally selling out. I am going to get rid of my 00 PSD X and buy a gasser. It is between a chevy crew with the 6.0 or a Ford Crew with a gas engine. What are you guys getting for mileage with both the 5.4 and V10. I really like the layout of the SD's but I am starting to run out of options. Thanks for all your help.
with my ex-cab 5.4 lifted on 33"s on 16 x 8's auto trans i get 13-14 around town and 17-18 on highway with 3.73 gears. i think it would be better if i had 4.10's with the tires i have.
First to answer the MPG question. I have a 03' V10. When it was stock, I got 11-13 mpg in 50/50 city/highway driving. After the Banks Powerpack and SCMT is get 12.5-15. I have the 3.73LS gears.
To respond to GM's piston slap. Back in 2001 I baught a 01' GMC 2500HD with the 6.0L engine. I was a strong engine. I had no complaints on the power or workability of the engine. As the engine reached 4-5K miles, at start up the was a loud ticking. This would last 2-3 minutes. Braught it to the dealer. They said piston slap. Noted it under warranty and also told me in no way does it affect the longevity or durability of the engine. I was a bit sceptical. The assured me if any engine failure past the 3/36 warranty would be covered. So I accepted it. As time went on the start up clanging got reduculous. As winter approached and the mornings got colder, the noise was louder and lasted longer. In the dead of winter, when the average low temps were -10 it was down right scary! I bet the diesel in you EX was quieter than that engine. It was really loud. That piston skirt just banging adn clanging away. Not only scary but embarrassing. I would let the engine warm up for 5-10 minutes until the slap stopped. On the coldest mornings as I started to drive, the noise would return. Absolutely unacceptable for a 21 century engine. It actually sounded like a oil starved engine. Switched to synthetic oil and no difference.
Anyone who knows anything about engines knows that when the dealer states no affect on durability or longevity is full of it. I drove the truck until it had 38K miles on it. I was not counting on the dealer to honor thier statement of taking care of any engine failure pastt he 3/36 warranty. They truck was other problems as well like bad voltage regulator at 36400 miles....you guessed it no warranty....leaking power steering pump at 36900 miles....you guessed it no warranty....and a mis aligned power steering pulley that caused the the pump failure in the first place and cause the serpentine belt to keep flying off. The pulley alignment was a factory assembly goof but it took until 37000 miles to sow up....and you guessed it no warranty.
So after all that. I traded it in while it still ran and got $24600 for it and baught my current 03' super duty.
The only dissapointing this is my currenty V10 has the slightest cold weather engine ticking at start up
I was a loyal GM owner until that POS 2001 GMC. Now at 51K miles this truck is the most fun and best truck I have ever owned.
Good luck in your descisions.

If I set the cruise control to 75, I can get a pretty consistent 13 mpg. I recently took a trip and set the c.c. to 70 and got 13.5. I think I could hit 14 at 65 mph but I just don't have the patience. I get an average of 12 during my usual commuting.
14-15 everywhere... running 75mph with cc on highway and regular driving around town... probably a 50-50 mix of highway/city most of the year. It's a reg cab 4x4 250 with the 5.4 and 265 tires with the 5spd. I plan on changing out the original fuel filter this weekend, hopefully I'll get a little bit more out of it
I have a 06 F350 CC v10 with 4:30 gears. Approx 6K miles on the engine. In town, approx 10 mpg. Mixed approx 12.5 mpg, 60 mph approx 14.4, 65 mph approx 13.8. Towing a 8K travel trailer approx 8 to 9 Mpg if stay between 60 and 65 mph. Not jumping on it too hard. The Ford V10 is great. Good luck with your decision!
The first few weeks of these high gas prices I was light on the pedal. I got up to 15 on the hwy once. Now I'm getting on it more than ever, pent up frustration I guess.
Anyway...11 mpg average per tank now that I gave up drivng like grandpa just to get 30-25 more miles per tank. CC 4X4 V10 Auto 4.10 gears
Ha! I hear you JKBrad. I've driven as carefully as I could and only seen a 10% improvement in gas mileage. What's the point? Might as well enjoy the ride!
Short trips around twisty, hilly central MO roads, about 10. Highway average around 14.0 at 65mph. This is with 265 tires, haven't checked with new 285's. I figure my 4:30 gears hurt me by about 1.5mpg compared with 3.73's, but these V10's are fantastic with 4.30's behind them. 2005's and up can only be better.
Well you cant go wrong with a Ford superduty crew cab. They exceed the need. The V-10 has the best mileage off the gas engines. Everbody complains about the horrible gas mileage with the 6.0 GM truck. An Piston slap. Im afraid GMs engines still have it. They have a website devoted to it. With the introduction off the new GM trucks in 99 the quality has went down hill. I know several longtime GM owners that have went to Ford an have never looked back. My vote is with Ford unless you want problems. Its nice to see another Nebraskan online. Good Luck
i have an 04 f250 reg. cab 4x4 auto 3.73 gears with flowmaster, cold air intake, throttlebody spacer and hypertech.i only get about 11-12 mostly city. truck has 9000 miles. is this normal and will mpg increase as milage gets higher? i heard this but not sure if i believe it.........
