Was Bored

Well yesterday i noticed a metal hollow type noise hitting another metal piece in the rear of my truck. so I got to pushing the exhaust around and reproduced the noise. The dealer I bought the truck from installed a hidden hitch 30k goosneck hitch on my truck. Well the exhaust hits the bracket for the hitch where it bends over the axle housing close to the bed. I tried to manipulate the brackets to clear it with no luck. I figured while i was down there i was looking at doing a straight pipe infront of the rear wheel. Especialy since in the future i know there is a 4" exhaust that i know will hit worse. I am scared there is going to be a hole rubed in the exhaust and have a leak so i wanted to see what a straight pipe sounded like....I unbolted the exhaust after the cat and wow a completely different sound. so i thought lets see what it does when the cat is off. Even better. Although I dont think i should have because when I do get my exhaust i will want to run kitty free since it sounded so good. I might get a straight through muffler and exit it in front of the rear wheel since i will be using the hitch. The only other way i believe this will work is if i just put turn downs but I dont want to have underside covered with soot. I thought i would share that the 6.0's sound sweet straight piped.

Also any ideas on a kit that does this or would it be better to by down pipe and do a custom cat-back? Since the cat is directly bolted to the downpipe.

I am confused by all the exhaust talk. I thought it was best to keep the muffler and cat for backpressure? Also, what about emissions inspection? Wouldn't that be a hefty fine if you had not cat? What about noise. I had a dirt bike that I took the whole exhaust pipe off to do some tuning. Fired it up and wanted headphones or I would have had a migraine. That was only 1 cylinder 80 cc engine. I can't imagine a 6.0 liter 8 cylinder with no muffler? Wouldn't it be embarassingly loud? Maybe diesels don't make the noise gassers do? Help me understand.

Also, what about warranty issues? Do you have over 100,000 milees, or are you not worried about warranty work?

im worried about warranty work thast why a cat would stay on there. Also the straight through muffler. It just sounded really good. It was louder but not that loud. Just made a nice much deeper tone. I only have 6k on mine so i wont do the system yet. I am going to contact the dealer today as far as options since they installed the hitch...

NOOOO.... It most certainly isn't.

As far as I am aware, there aren't inspections for diesels in the US yet...
What about noise.
I think this is the goal of a lot of people that put these kind of systems on.

The dealership that installed the hitch is sending me a check for $100. I still need to go to local hitch companies and see what they charge to fix this. If its more I will make them send more money. Still looking at the cost of a catback though and have it exit before the rear wheel.

Guess again. We have to get our diesel trucks smogged & inspected yearly here in a couple counties in Nevada and if you don't have a Kracker you at a minimum won't get smogged at all (= loss of $35 and no registration renewal) and if you're unlucky like my coworker, a DOT cop will be there and give you a ticket at the same time. Any state that has an annual safety inspection requirement most likely requires things like that looked at too I'd imagine.

Now, from my Dodge experience with removing the muffler it wasn't much louder than with the muffler, but most of us left the resonator on so as to avoid the dreaded exhaust "drone" noise they made in some trucks with just straight pipes to the back. All I gained out of hacking off the muffler was a very very small EGT difference (we're talking like 10 degrees at certain power output level).

Is this the B&W hitch? If so,While reading their web I believe there was mention of a different hanger for the exhaust that came with the hitch.

Not correct in my experience...
I just had to have my '03 F-250 safety and emissions inspected to renew my registration here in Utah. I had to do a lot of calling around to find a station that could do the emissions test.

I realize that if you remove the muffler you want more noise. However, why would you want so much noise that people stare and think your truck is broke? i.e. my comparison to the 80 cc dirt bike with no exhaust pipe. I also just recalled when I had my Datsun 260Z I had a relay problem which cuased a huge backfire that blew the muffler open at the seem. I was in high school and thought it was pretty awesome but the fumes and the obnoxious noise became too much after only one day. My question was can you compare the sound from a unmuffled diesel to an unmuffled gas or is that more like comparing apples & oranges? I only have one year of experience with diesels so far and no experience around one with no muffler or kat.

Ok. Didn't realise that there was emissions requirements for diesels in some states yet.
Sorry.

As more diesels being quieter - in my experience they are.
I had my last diesel straightpiped (a 'yota). Apart from WOT, it didn't make any difference to the noise. Mind you, this was a non-turbo diesel, so they are louder to start off with.

Big,

Thanks for the reply. I figured it was something like that. Otherwise, if the sound was similar to a gasser with no muffler it would easily tip off the local police and make it a much less attractive mod.

the 6.0 w/o mufler and cat just adds a whistle up to 2500 RPM's, then it sounds like chewbacca on steriods.

well, looks like ill be ordering a MBRP 409 turbo back system without a tip because i dont like the clamp on ones. I had to get 4 quotes from hitch companies(all said they wouldnt modify exhaust even hangers) and 4 exhaust shops locally. Long story short I am getting $200 to put towards a new system. Ill install cat-back for now then eventually install downpipe later.
