I have a small oil leak on my excursion, warrenty expired 4 mos ago it has 93,000 miles. Service rep said they would need a diesel mechanic to look at it to determine what is going on, he said it could be as simple as o-rings or as much as a head gasket. This would run anywhere from $200-$900 in repairs.
Later in the day I spoke to my normal mechanic and he metioned that diesel engines have a release valve on the crankcase(I think), any ways he said it is some sort of oil release valve and I will see small amount of oil on the ground. He mentioned in other engines it is just oil that is recycled within the engine, but not on diesel engines. When I looked under the vehicle I notice that there was oil dripping from the oil pan plug, and can see oil on the oil pan. Is anyone familiar with this oil release valve? Or is worth the $$$ to go to the dealership and have them fix it?

What year is your Excursion?
Since you have a diesel engine, it comes with a 5 year 100,000 mile warranty from the factory. My guess is that something like this would be covered. Check your 7.3 liter supplement in your manual and see what it says.

HUH? not to be off-topic... but you mean to tell me that the finance girl didn't tell me this?? I've got an '05 6.0 Diesel.... and BOUGHT, the 6/100k warranty. I'm amazed if this is true and she didn't clarify this to me.
Toreador... can you PM me with 'facts'.
Sorry to rob yor thread.... good luck on the oil leak.
take a flash light and look in the valley of the motor, if the oil is in the front of the motor then it is probably the high pressure oil pump. If I was a betting man I would blame the Turbo pedistal o-rings as this is the most common place for oil leaks (very common actually) This oil will be present near and under the turbo wih oil all over the pedistal. Start by placing a old towel or blanket under the oil pan and tranny dust cover as this is where the oil will drip. Then take a 3 cans of brake cleaner and spray it all down and around the valley of the motor and all over the pedistal. It will thoroughly clean the motor and leave no residue. Now watch the motor for the next couple of days and see where the oil begins to collect and come from. If it is bad enough to want to fix, it will cost you 14.00 dollars in o-rings, and about 4 hours of your time to remove the turbo and pedistal, clean the o-ring seats and replace everything. Better have another set of hands present to replace the turbo as it is a real MF'er to get it back in, Then a couple of beers to feel better. Cause your stomach and chest is gonna feel like Randy Johnson threw a handful of marbles at you. Laying across the top of that motor really hurts.
