Novice engine guy
I started my 1997 F150 yesterday and just as it caught, there was a loud clang and jolt that shook the truck pretty hard. Best guess is that the timing chain broke and as a result, it took some other things with it.
I have been pretty unhappy with the V6 since the day I got it, and wonder if I could swap out the current engine
for a V8, and perhaps pick up some mpg on the road and use some bigger tires at Scout camp when I have to go out there rather, than repair it.What all would be involved in changing to bigger engine (big picture)? Would it be worth it, or should I fix and trade it. 120K+ miles on it.
Thanks
Thanks for the input. (sorry this got so long)
Yep, submarine diesels, no problem-o, but trucks now-a-days

I should have kept that 72 El Camino after all.
I love these silly little guyz.Opps, I forgot to say that I do have a *very good mechanic (fellow Scouter) for major stuff. Course, he was a mister good wrench kinda guy, but now he is managing a small shop and working at owing his own. Good, honest guy. Unfortunately, he is in the VA hospital with a busted leg this week.
*I was thinking that it was gonna cost me major bongo bucks anyway. Would that make a difference or still fix and trade?
Quick aside.
Until this happened - - -
I was goin to take the F150 to a major work truck lease place near Houston and trade for a newer used model. This company is strict on the lease maintenance requirements and I have heard nothing but good from folks who have bought from them at great prices. I cant believe how hard it is to get a work kinda truck from the dealer; ya know one ya can wash out with a water hose and dry with compressed air, ah the 60s

so it's fix and trade (if the spousal unit will let me-she may have gone for the engine swap)
I appreciate you clearing things up for me.
