Engine size help?

I have a 64 F100 2wd. the engine is not original because the vin calls for a 6cyl. I have the block casting number, so my question is: Can anyone identify this engine for me? it would be greatly appreciated. the block number is B5AE-601-A

Just a wild shot over the part number. B5 would indicate the block design was released to production in 1955 and in that era it'd just about have to be a Y-Block. 272-292 and 312 are the various flavors and the easiest way to ID a Y-Block is the exhaust crosses over in front of the motor. Driver's side to passenger side I believe.

I don't believe the 312 was introduced until '56. At least in passenger cars.

Murph2006, Welcome to FTE The best truck show on the net.

The 64 used a front rear mount system, and in 65 started with the side mount.
Does you engine mount front/rear or side?

Check me if I'm wrong here, but the Y-Block motors also had the distributor mounted on the back side of the manifold

In order to check displacement, you will need to know the measurements of the stroke and the bore. I am not too familiar with the Y-block, but if the stroke was different between the 292 or the 312(the experts can chime in here), at least you can use the one number to get you closer to the motor you have.
