Well, the time has come where I am finally at the wear indicators on my Continental (contitrac) tires. With less than 20000 miles on them! I think Conti rates them at 60000. Oh well, dont want to make the mistake that Ford made so I am in the market for some GOOD replacements. Here are my questions:
1) Is anything out there in the same size (or a little taller) that are E rated?
2) Is it necessary to run E rated tires on an F350, when towing a 6000 pound travel trailor, while hauling no more than 2 - 3 thousand lbs in cargo/personnel in the cab and bed?
There are some D rated tires out there that would work but I am uncertain if there would be adverse affects with my intended use. I have seen F350's with D rated tires on the street but I think they are mostly for show and not to do any hauling and towing.
I just want to avoid using the conti's until something else comes around.
Any input would be appreciated. Thanks, Tim
I just put 35 x 12.50 x 18 Toyo M/T tires on my 05. They fit on the stock rim and I have not encountered any rubbing unless I am offroad flexing the suspension. These tires are load range E and rated at around 3400# each. I think the stock Continentals are rated at 3600# so you loose a little load capacity, but not near as much as the load range D tires in the same size.
If you don't need your full legal GVWR, then you should be fine with D tires.
I do need this rating and the only other E tire in the 18 inch size that I know of is Goodyear Wranglers 275-65s so until we get more choices we are kind of stuck.
Good Luck.
Hey i've got 55,000 on my conti's and should make close to 60 before I pull them off before winter comes. Put some air in them and rotate them and they'll last. I couldn't have ask for a better tire for my driving and after I checked prices on the others it looks like I'll get another set
I have 19500 right now and am just starting to hit the wear indicators. I rotated the tires every 5000 miles (at each oil change) and kept the air at the recommended pressure on the door jamb. I do drive a canyon to work so maybe that is part of the difference between yours and mine. I do however think that these tires should have made it longer than 20000 miles, even with the canyon drive. The tread is not good in snow (which I have a need to drive in) and am not happy with the mileage/longevity. Driving on dry pavement on the highway seemed to ride okay but not in snow.
The first chance I get, I will dump the conti's. If I can get away with D's, I'll do that until other choices are available.
Thanks for the tip on the Toyo's Super Dawg, but I think mud terrain is a little too soft and agressive for my needs. I'll bet the look darn good though. Tempting....
I have 11,000 miles on my contis. They ride well on pavement and are quiet. They are lousy on snow and ice. I called tire rack looking for a winter tire and they say there are none available for my 18 inch wheels. Its hard to believe there are not more tire choices out there yet. I would like some blizzaks which work great on my car. Will just have to use 4 wheel drive a lot like I did last winter.
