I have a 98 f-150 around 100,000 miles on it 4.6 litre,my problem just started a couple days ago ,when i start it up it will run for a second and die.If the iac motor is bad will it put out a code? There is a little screw behind the butterfly on the throttle body, i turned it a few times to open the butterfly and the truck startes right up.I keep in tip top condition as far as maintanace. But it does seem to idle a little faster after i done this with the screw. Can i take the iac motor off inspect and clean?
Reset the screw to the old position. Then try this: Next time the engine won't start, press the accelerator about 1/3 down and try again. If the engine starts and runs, but dies after release of the accelerator, it's a pretty strong signal that the IAC is in the closed position, as pressing the accelerator opens the throttle plate and takes the IAC out of the picture. My 1999 4.6 Expedition did not throw a code when the IAC failed.
Some people take off the IAC and clean the carbon off the plunger and port with throttle body cleaner (make sure the can says SAFE FOR OXYGEN SENSORS), but you're usually just buying a little time. If this is the original IAC, it's lasted a long time. If you plan to replace the IAC and buy a new one from a Ford dealer, make sure that you buy a new IAC gasket as well. They're sold seperately.
What PaulC said. I just replaced the IAC valve on my 97 4.6. I cleaned the old one as best I could but it didn't help that much. Mine set me back 102 bucks at the Ford dealer.
