You can use a calculator to find the derivitive at a certain point, but that kind of defeats the purpose of the class. You chould know how to find the derivitive by hand, using the power rule, quotient rule, chain rule, a table, etc...

oh, obviously, which is why he teaches us that stuff first. Some teachers just straight said, NO CALCULATORS. Well, I'm in what it supposed to be the most technologically advanced school on the East Coast at least, and we still have to do Calculus long hand? Any future job position where a calculus problem comes up, your boss isn't going to be looking for all of the crossed t's and dotted i's, but the correct answer. That's more of a personal gripe than anything, but the teacher is allowing us calculator use, and has even been giving us pointers. I just know that there are a lot more functions that I havent used yet. We did learn 'nDeriv(' though

The whole point of making sure to do the work is so that you have the correct understanding of how the problem works, and so that you get the right answer. Your boss would care if you screwed up and gave him the wrong answer. The TI-83+ can do limit calculus stuff, you really want the TI-89.

I'm not entirely sure if a TI83, can handle derivatives or not. If it does, it may not give you a complete solution for all derivatives. Check your usual manual, it'll give you the best way on how to input the derivatives if it does allow you to do them.
TI 89 is definitely the way to go...TI 92 is a REALLY good way to go, but most instructors do not allow you to use it on ANY test, so it's pretty much pointless to have, except when doing the homework.
