I have a 1983 van with a 351 and auto trans.
The main pan (squarish) under my trans. is leaking fluid.
I believe a trans. filter is located here too.
Can I remove the pan and replace the filter and gasket
without any other parts coming out.???
I have the manual... and looks like there are numerous
***** and valves there that may fall out when the
"pan" is removed...

Not that Im aware of, but Ive never actually done it
No, you can remove the pan and filter without things falling out. It's when you get to the valve body that things will start getting interesting. It is a messy job, best thing to do is get a big catch pan then loosen the bolts, get one corner looser then the rest so the fluid will run that way. Even then after a lot has run out you will need to be careful removing the pan, there will be more fluid in it and can spill easy. Oh yeah, do when the trans is cool, hot fluid running down your arm and all over is not fun at all.
