Ok I was talking with some friends today and we got on the subject of flat tires. So it brought to my attention that I still have not yet taken care of the fact that I donot have a jacking device in my 65.
1. What did these trucks come with?
2. Where was it located?
3. What are you using?
4. What works the best bumper jack or bottle jack? (I don't like scissor jacks)
I'd avoid bumper jacks; they're unstable and dangerous. Not to mention what they can do to the bumper if you have one of those cheap front ones.
Go with either a good bottle jack or a small floor jack.
Don't know what the early 60's came with, my '69 is stock with a junky mechanical jack mounted under the hood on an inner fender.
My dad had an old '75 F250--had one of those mechanical bottle jacks. I guess that's what you'd call 'em. Never used it for a flat, although my brother and I used it once to jack up a felled tree to get the branches out from underneath. Still amazed we lived to tell that story.
I have often wondered where the jack was stowed on the 61-66. Mine was wrapped in burlap and thrown in the side toolbox, but where did it go on the trucks without the optional toolbox? There was no provision for it under the hood, like John says. John, have you based your conclusion that the jack was stuffed under the seat because there's no other plausible explanation, or have you seen Ford literature that says that? Do you think that maybe the trucks without the toolbox had holes drilled in the floor for clamps for the jack and wrench?
Eric
Eric, I relay most on my memory from that time period. I have seen them mounted along the top of the inner fender (with a factory mount) but my trucks don't have that mount nor the holes for one. I don't recall any hardware for a mount under the seat either. I generally don't carry one these days. I need to make better arrangements.
