I recently purchased an 04 Expedition Eddie Bauer with 20k miles. I'm getting a heavy "thunk" when downshifting from 3rd to 2nd gear. Other than that, the truck drives and upshifts perfectly. I don't have issues shifting in and out of other gears. I took the truck to my local Ford dealer, and they pulled a service bulletin that says this is "normal" behavior that some F-150's and Expeditions may experience. I'm not buying it... Has anybody else experienced this? Anybody get the same response from Ford? Anybody actually get this fixed?
I get that "clunk" sometimes but not always. It seems to depend on load/speed/day of the week??? I've pretty much ignored it since it doesn't happen all that often

Well... May be worth a $30 check at a reputable tranny shop... My truck developed a pronounced thunk (sounded like the rear end was trying catch up with the front)...
a week later the Drum holding most of the Clutch packs etc... exploded in the transmission - $2800...
Your dealer is correct. There is a service message on this. It is a normal
concern. It usually doesn't happen all the time it is dependent on throttle
position and speed of the truck when the shift occurs. If it is intermintant
it is working fine. If it is happening all the time or is very harsh you might
want to let the trans tech test drive and get his advice. If it is doing
what the message describes Ford Motor Company dictates what the dealer
can and cannot attempt to repair. If you dealer attempted to fix this under
warrenty ford would not pay and the dealer would be stuck with the bill.
Often times ford enginneering will research concerns like this and come up
with a fix such as a pcm reprogram. so check back with your dealer every
so often.
