The timing thing
My question is, I found a number stamped on top of intake right above the firing order stamp. It says "D4VE C18" I think. Very hard to read. Could someone give me a clue to what year they think I have? The truck is 78', motor is a transplant, the timing set I got is a 68-71. On the Comp Cams website I see they break it down from 68-71 & 71-87. I will probably return this set, and get one of their good double roller sets, just need to figure out the year of motor. I thought I saw this posted before, but havn't come across it. Thank you much for all help and advice. BlairThere are several places on the web where you can decode Ford part numbers. I think mil1lion on this site is the resident expert on part and vin numbers.
I would check the casting number on the block just to make sure the intake wasn't changed. The number should be behind the starter making it necessary to remove it to see the number (bummer).
Good luck.

The 70's had the timing retard built into them.
The 68-71 will allow you to have the timing straight up and that will improve performance on that engine.
Double roller for sure.
