if your off road in mud, sand or dirt and your not going to 44s you won't need the hydro assist to turn it like i said I run a spool with 35s and can turn just fine heck last weekend I even blew the ps hose and was still able to turn it even if it was a little hard, and I ain't that big of a guy.

A dana power lok is a limited slip clutch type posi, a lock-rite is a ratchet style locker.

I would rather stay away from clutch posi. Having to replace posi clutches is a pain in the ***.

I will have to look up the hydro assist set up so I can jimmy rig one up for myself. Thanks.
with 33's you prolly wont need the hydro assist but it is something to consider esp if you have some extra cash. your friends will flip when you have a huge red hydro cylinder bolted on your axle. sad part is most people will think its a steering stabilizer.

tractor supply parts house for the hydro cylinder ~ $60
4 reusable hydro fittings ~ $20
15' of hydro hose ~ $20
1/4" pipe thread tap from MSC ~ $8

Why for towing? I can see the rear of the truck coming around more often on ice, but why for towing? Don't they run as open diffs unless there's a traction problem?

No.

They lock when you apply excessive torque to them. When you are towing, any time you pull a little gas on it, you'll lock the rear up. It just depends on how strong the bias springs are.

so when you are pulling out up a hill with a loaded trailer weighing 5k, your rear end will lock about as soon as you get moving.

OK, I'm earnestly trying to understand the locker problem re towing. If they do lock up under torque strong enough to overcome the bias springs (say up a hill with trailer), why is this bad? Extra drag on the drivetrain? Why does this (in a word) 'suck'?

The reason I ask is I've been considering a locker for just that purpose - I tow a sailboat and sometimes have to deal with boat ramps that ... 'suck' ... see my earlier threads.

The only problem is with someone that has a "bias" against lockers, I used a detroit in a D70 HD behind my dually to pull a 28' gooseneck stock trailer, and the only time you would ever even know that was in there was when you got off of the pavement onto wet grass or mud and DIDN'T get stuck.

I've towed both ways. I've never towed more than 5k lbs, though. However, other than turning sharply (and being able to pull out in gravel), and some weirdness on ice, I wouldn't have a problem doing it again..

The cables would be no more different than the air lines on an arb. But the biggest thing is the manufacturer, i'm not sure whose making them as the orginal owners were having issues.
